The Master Group is a pharmaceutical company known for products such as the Coldkiller X medicine and the Megatoxin X pesticide. In 2000, it developed a cure to the taste disorders hypogeusia and ageusia. It is named after the Master family, led by the parents of the pastry chef Jeffrey Master until their deaths. Master still inherited the company as chair until his incarceration in 2000 for the murder of Pierre Hoquet.
The Angel's Recipe[]

In 2000, Master inherited a book from his parents. The book contained procedures for developing experimental drugs, including Megatoxin X and a cure to hypogeusia and ageusia. As part of the description of Megatoxin X, the book also mentioned that mixing it with normallium would produce a toxic gas. Master did not want to give the book to just anyone, so he decided to use it as a prize in a dessert competition in December, so that he could give it to someone whom he respected as a pastry chef. The Master Group objected to this, seeking to keep the book to itself, and sent pharmacist Delicia Scones to compete in the competition and retrieve the book. Katherine Hall, Master's adopted daughter, secretly helped Scones with her entries, believing that it was in everyone's best interest for the "Angel's Recipe" to remain in the Master Group's possession. The Angel's Recipe was contained in a chocolate picture frame for every participant to see.
Master and Scones made it into the finals along with two other competitors: sculptor Pierre Hoquet, who was operating under the pseudonym "Isaac Dover", and Dane Gustavia. Scones was not the only cheater in the contest, as the other two finalists collaborated with each other to compensate for the areas in which each was lacking. However, Hoquet betrayed Gustavia in the finals, cutting off the collaboration after being given the frozen sherbet that he needed to finish his entry. This betrayal culminated in a confrontation when Hoquet caught the desperate Gustavia trying to take pictures of the Angel's Recipe, leading to Gustavia killing Hoquet. Although Gustavia initially tried to frame Scones, who had been caught using inedible props, for the murder, Master ended up taking the fall. Gregory Edgeworth and Raymond Shields took up Master's case, but due to the machinations of prosecution legend Manfred von Karma and Chief Prosecutor Blaise Debeste, his client was found guilty of being an accomplice to the murder.
The Master Group retrieved the Angel's Recipe after the trial, and Hall was kicked out of Master's mansion. Hall spent the next 18 years earning money through an acting career so that she could buy back the mansion and the Angel's Recipe. After doing so, she converted the mansion into an art gallery and set up a poison gas trap for the real killer so that Master could be exonerated. The trap worked, sparking an investigation involving Gregory's son Miles and all of the players still alive from the IS-7 Incident.
Debeste tried to use his influence in the Prosecutorial Investigation Committee to take Edgeworth out of the investigation, but due to the ties that he had to both the defense attorney and the prosecutor in Master's trial, he was allowed to continue investigating. Eventually, he found out what Hall had done, and confronted Gustavia. A trapped Gustavia tried to wriggle out of his predicament by pointing out that the statute of limitations on the IS-7 case had run out, meaning he could not be convicted. However, Edgeworth revealed that Master had only been convicted as an accomplice to murder charge, meaning that the statute of limitations was extended for a year if the culprit could not be found. Gustavia was subsequently brought to justice.
