Shu Takumi (巧 舟 Takumi Shuu) is a Japanese video game developer working at Capcom who was the main director and scriptwriter of the core Ace Attorney series until Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. He also provided the voice for Phoenix Wright in the Japanese versions of those games and composed the song "The Guitar's Serenade".
Takumi's most recent Ace Attorney work has been writing scenario designs for the crossover game Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. He is currently working on the spin-off game Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken.
Career
Shu Takumi joined Capcom in 1994 along with Hideki Kamiya (who would later voice Godot). His first game was Gakkou no Kowai Uwasa: Hanako-san ga Kita!! (学校のコワイうわさ 花子さんがきた!!; lit. "Here Comes Hanako: Scary Stories of Your School!!), a video game adaptation of an anime of the same name.
In 1998, Capcom assigned him to cooperate with Shinji Mikami to release Resident Evil 2. After the commercial success of Dino Crisis, Capcom asked their developers to work on a sequel. Takumi asked to join the project as the director, which Capcom accepted. Like its predecessor, Dino Crisis 2 was positively received by critics and was a commercial success.
In 2001, Takumi decided to instead work on creating games in the visual novel genre, and thus the Ace Attorney series was created, with the first four games in the series (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations, and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney) being written and directed by him. After Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, he considered the series finished. Takumi instead went on to create a new game called Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, which was well-received critically.
Although Takumi considered the Ace Attorney series finished, director Takeshi Yamazaki and producer Motohide Eshiro worked together to continue it with two interquel titles set between the third and fourth games: Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and Gyakuten Kenji 2.
