Reunion, and Turnabout

Pearl Fey is Maya Fey's cousin. She was the youngest girl of the Fey clan during Phoenix Wright's career. She is a prodigy among spirit mediums, having "intense spiritual power", and also having knowledge of the Fey clan that exceeds Maya's, who is expected to assume the title of Kurain Master.

[edit] Early life

Up until she met Phoenix Wright, Pearl Fey had never been outside of Kurain Village, living only with her mother Morgan and her older cousins Maya and Mia, until Mia left Kurain Village to pursue her career as a defense attorney. She never knew her father because he left shortly after she was born. She has grown up around bad marriages, which has been used to explain her fascination with a romantic pairing between Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey.

[edit] First encounter with Wright

Main article: Reunion, and Turnabout

Pearl first met Phoenix Wright when he first visited the village, but she quickly ran away when he tried to speak with her. They met again after the murder of Turner Grey; Wright found her in the Winding Way and immediately spotted that she was holding the unique key for the Channeling Chamber, but she still avoided him. However, after showing Pearl Maya's magatama, she realized that he was "Mr. Nick", Maya's "special someone" and became friendly towards him.

[edit] Personality

When meeting strangers she doesn't say anything and will quickly run away. This is due to her mother teaching her to do this whenever a suspicious-looking person tries to talk to her. Although usually a cheerful and innocent little girl, she quickly becomes upset if she thinks Wright is acting too friendly to any woman other than Maya. She then glares at Wright or slaps him, often repeatedly. Wright notes her speech, and even her laugh, to be refined in tone.

Her spiritual powers are considerably strong, though not as strong as Misty's powers were, and she is considered a prodigy. Nonetheless, Pearl looks up to Maya a great deal and wishes to be like her someday. Pearl believes that Wright and Maya have a romantic relationship. If she thinks Wright has done or said something that could hurt Maya's feelings, she would correct him, going so far as to slap him. Maya attributes this to the high divorce rate among the Fey clan.

Often, someone will mention something that people in mainstream society would take for granted, but Pearl will have no idea what he or she means, knowing very little about the world outside her village (e.g. "...law...yer?").

Pearl is not good with spelling (while Harumi has trouble with kanji) but she is a big fan of picture book author Elise Deauxnim. She also watches Kids' Masterpiece Theatre every Sunday.

[edit] Name

  • The kanji for her Japanese name mean "spring beauty".
  • Her Japanese name, Harumi, can mean "spring" (coming from the word "Haru"), whilst the "Mi"-part can mean "sixth sign of Chinese zodiac", which would be the Snake. However, being born in 2009 - 2010, her zodiac animal would actually be either the Rat, Ox or Tiger.
  • Her surname, "Sato" may come from the word "village" or "home country", whilst the "Aya" part has no meaning.
