(I still can't believe it. I still can't believe this is happening. How can it be that just beyond the doors to this quiet little chamber... ...is the highest court in Japan, waiting to decide my fate?) |
The Supreme Court of Judicature was the highest court in Japan during the country's Meiji period. It housed at least two courtrooms and five defendants' antechambers.
Two notable trials held at the Supreme Court were the secret trial of Ryunosuke Naruhodo for the murder of John Wilson (which started Naruhodo on the path to becoming an attorney) and the trial of Rei Membami for the murder of Jezaille Brett.
Trials[]
There have been four known trials held at the Supreme Court of Judicature:
- Secret trial of Ryunosuke Naruhodo for the murder of John Wilson (Courtroom 2)
- Trial of Iyesa Nosa for the theft of Kyurio Korekuta's koban coin
- Trial of Rei Membami for the murder of Jezaille Brett (Courtroom 1)
- Trial of Satoru Hosonaga for infiltrating the office of Judge Seishiro Jigoku
Name[]
- The Supreme Court of Judicature is likely based on the real-life Supreme Court of Judicature of Japan (大審院, Dai-shin'in), which was the highest judicial body in the Empire of Japan from 1875 to 1947, when it was abolished by order of the American occupation authorities following the abolition of the Meiji Constitution. The building itself, modeled after the Court of Cassation in France, was heavily damaged by United States air raids during World War II, but was repaired and used as the Supreme Court of Japan until 1974. The present-day Tokyo High Court was built on the former location of the Supreme Court of Judicature.
Development[]
- Compared to past courtrooms in the series, the Supreme Court of Judicature has a longer witness stand to allow for more than one witness to testify at once, in a similar manner to the witch trials in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
