On the western edge of the Far East lies a country of mystery and faith. Trials in this country are held in the Court of Resignation.

The High Court of Khura'in, also known as the Court of Resignation, is the name given to the courtroom located in Khura'in's Tehm'pul Temple.

Known trials[]

The High Court of Khura'in was used for the following trials:

Layout[]

The design of the High Court bears many resemblances to the courtrooms used by the Los Angeles District Court, albeit with cultural decor and aesthetics appropriate for the kingdom. Like the Los Angeles courtrooms, the High Court of Khura'in contains two long tables that act as prosecution and defense benches, a witness podium centered between them, and a judicial bench opposite the witness stand. The gallery is positioned behind the witness podium, as it is with the design the Los Angeles courtrooms adopted in 2027. The sacred image of a butterfly, a Khura'inese national symbol, adorns the wall behind the judge's bench, in place of where the Scales of Justice would be in a Los Angeles courtroom.

The most notable difference in the design of the High Court of Khura'in is the presence of the Pool of Souls--a pool of water between the two attorney benches used as a mystic window to the spirit world in which visions can be summoned via the process of the Divination Séance. When the Dance of Devotion is conducted, the water will channel the vision called forth by the summoner and project the images of a victim's final moments and what they saw or felt before death. These images are then used to determine the guilt or innocence of the defendant. Originally this was used as a tool by both the prosecution and defense to aid in their investigations and arguments. However, thanks to the ratification of the "Defense Culpability Act" by Ga'ran Sigatar Khura'in in the wake of the her sister's assassination, the defense attorney profession was diminished to nothingness as anyone who would defend someone found guilty would face an equal punishment to the defendant, rendering the only means to determine guilt the Divination Séance. This in turn has earned the courtroom its "Court of Resignation" moniker--without anyone standing up for them, defendants are resigned to their fate, regardless of guilt. The Defiant Dragons insurgency organization--led by former attorney and disgraced royal consort Dhurke Sahdmadhi--seeks to reestablish a fair and just judicial system where the Divination Séance and defense attorneys can once again coexist.

Development[]

The development team had discussed the state of the defense's bench after over 20 years of the Defense Culpability Act, and considered making it dirty or removing it altogether, but could not incorporate a scene to restore the bench in a natural way.[1]
